Hyaluronic Acid – Is It The Skin’s Hero Or Just Zero?

Hyaluronic Acid - Is It The Skin's Hero Or Just Zero?

Hyaluronic acid seems to be a real buzz word on everyone’s lips these days, from fillers to skin cream, supplements and more it seems as though everyone has jumped on the bandwagon.

The interesting thing is that hyaluronic acid is in fact not a new skin care ingredient at all, but rather one that has been around for sometime and is pretty much tried and tested.

What is it?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring human constituent responsible for cushioning the skin, it can also be found in our eyes and in the joints of the body. Interestingly enough is the fact that hyaluronic acid is not acidic at all and is in fact a powerful humectant which draws moisture towards the skin leaving the skin looking smooth, hydrated and plump.

Why do I need it?

Babies are born with very high levels of hyaluronic acid hence their lovely plump cheeks and youthful soft buttocks, however as we age our bodies produce less hyaluronic acid leaving us with less of the ‘plumpness’ and more of a ‘hollowed’ out look under the eyes and in the naso labial folds.

Where do they use it?

Hyaluronic acid is used as an injectable filler for areas under the eye in the naso-labial fold, the lips and more. It serves as a medium which restores a fuller, plumper skin in the area into which it is injected, over time the fillers get assimilated back into the body and once again needs to be touched up.

These days there are fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane that consist of hyaluronic acid which is ‘man made’ version of the product manufactured in a laboratory. It is used for restoring a youthful appearance to skin and improving facial contours.

Targeted areas it is used for:

– enhancing volume – lips, cheeks, naso-labial fold and jawline

– erasing wrinkles – the eye area

– augmenting lips – lips area

– inducing collagen production – under eyes, nasolabial folds, cheeks and more

Hyaluronic also comes as an oral supplement these days, as well as being found in many a cosmetic cream for topical application. It goes without saying that the concept of treating the body holistically, in other words from the inside, the outside and using injectables, will give you the best results and the longest lasting results overall.

In our eyes hyaluronic acid is a nature inspired hero for sure!
