Exfoliation: When Too Much Of A Good Thing Can Be Bad!

Exfoliation When Too Much Of A Good Thing Can Be Bad
Exfoliation is a crucial part of any skin regime, however, it is not a one size fits all. In fact, these days the option can be quite overwhelming.

What is exfoliation?

Exfoliation a skin-care technique where you remove dead cells from the top layer of your skin. By removing this layer of unwanted dead skin cells, you will brighten your complexion. It will also facilitate the penetration of your skin-care products deeper into your skin, without any wastage.
It is important to cleanse and exfoliate your skin daily, this rids your skin of unwanted dirt, grime, dead skin cells and refreshes the complexion. However, too much cleansing and exfoliating however can strip the skin of its natural oils which form a protective barrier and reveal soft vulnerable skin that is not ready to be exposed to the elements as yet.

What are the types of exfoliation?

1. Chemical Exfoliation
Chemical exfoliators, use ingredients such as alpha- or beta hydroxy acids. They include peels, face washes and even daily facial peel pads (glycolic acid) to dissolve dead skin cells.
2. Mechanical Exfoliation
With mechanical exfoliation, you could use a tool such as a cleansing brush, cloth or even a face scrub. These physically remove the dead skin cells.

Here is a quick guideline:

Cleanse – morning & evening (and after exercise)
Exfoliate – 2 – 3 times per week maximum

When should you be cautious?

Not everyone is meant to use a mechanical scrub or intense facial peel. In fact, it is always best to get professional assistance the first time around. With specific skin conditions, it is also not advised. For instance, acne patients will be doing more harm than good. Inflamed skins will only become more irritated, resulting in dark marks known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
